Artist's Statement
Susan McDonald lives in Canton, Ontario, where she has her studio, works in clay, and teaches in a lovely rural setting. She also teaches ceramics for Durham College, Foundations of Art & Design Program. She has developed a method of appliqué onto the damp clay form which allows absolutely vivid color -- reminiscent of abstract techniques done on paper – which is then combined with other glazes. This technique is a great contrast to her slip covered small dark brown teapots which reflect strong design elements rather than glaze covering. One of her teapots has been accepted in 2008 at the “Big Fish, Small Teapot” International Competition, in 2007 she won a Fusion Design Award for her installation “Teapot Meditation, 108 Teapots,” and a section of this installation was used in the Pottery Supply House 50th Year Anniversary Calendar. You will find her work in galleries in Toronto, Port Hope, Fenelon Falls, and the U.S.
