Garden Art Handbuilding in Clay

Take your clay exploration outside to the beautiful & inspiring grounds of Rice Lake Arts this summer!

Do you love your garden or have a friend or family member whose garden could use a whimsical ornament? Then this 5-week workshop, a new collaboration between the Kawartha Potters Guild and Rice Lake Arts, will be of interest to you. Workshop leader Sue Flannagan, an accomplished artist who loves colour and whimsy, will help you to create garden ornaments in clay inspired by plants, wildlife, insects, flowers or whatever you imagine! Sue will introduce you to a number of handbuilding techniques, and support you as you bring your ideas to life. This workshop is open to complete beginners, as well as those with clay experience. The first 4 sessions will be held at Rice Lake Arts with the final session being held at KPG. Pieces will be glazed fired at KPG after the last session to be picked up approx. 1 week later.

*Sessions at Rice Lake Arts are planned to take place outdoors- weather permitting*

Wednesdays July 29, August 5, 12, & 19: Hosted at Rice Lake Arts

You’ll explore ideas and learn how to bring them to life. Over the first 4 weeks you will build and decorate your garden art. Bring some inspiration with you or find some as you go! After week 4 your pieces will be brought to KPG to be bisque fired.

Wednesday August 26: Hosted at Kawartha Potters Guild

Your Garden Art will now be bisqued and ready for glazing. The Kawartha Potters Guild makes over 20 different dipping glazes in the studio. Add colour or a clear gloss finish to highlight your work. Pieces will then go into their final glaze firing- they will emerge glazed and vitrified so they can live a long happy life in your garden.

Instructor: Sue Flanagan
Sue loves to create whimsical outdoor art, a visit to her garden will attest to her imagination and artistic skills. A lover of colour, form and whimsy, her garden ornaments are inspired by nature and her sense of humour. Sue loves to work with underglazes, decorating the surface of her clay work with complex and ornate designs, marrying her passion for working in clay with her love of colour and painting. In addition to her work in clay, she enjoys experimenting with painting using watercolour, oil, acrylic, inks and encaustic. Sue teaches at the Kawartha Potters Guild and last season at Rice Lake Arts she volunteered at our Big Brothers and Big Sisters Art Camp, helping the kids to create amazing 3D fish in clay.
