2020 Holiday Sale Profile – Karina Bates

Karina (Horus Eye Pottery) has been an active potter for about 16 years and teaches at the Kawartha Potters Guild, when not managing her farm, or working in her studio. Her work is strongly influenced by medieval, and especially middle eastern designs and ornamentation. She also very much enjoys making reproduction pottery for the re-enactment community.

In 2016, Karina participated in the Fusion Mentorship program under Michelle Mendlowitz, and in 2018, she travelled to Icheon, Korea with 5 other members of the Guild, to learn techniques from Korean pottery masters. Also in 2018, Karina was accepted into the KPG Juried show at the Peterborough Art Gallery and was honoured to win the Design Award from Angelo di Petta.

“I have been able to enjoy making pottery for many years.  My main focus is functional pottery.  I also enjoy making decorative raku pottery and sculptures. Living on a farm allows me to appreciate the peaceful countryside, beautiful old barns, the wildflowers, and the many lakes in this area, which I often portray on my pottery. Family, friends and travel are all very important to me.”

Our Holiday sale is a bit different this year.  Make sure you reserve your holiday shopping trip with our new booking system.

This bloomed into a full time career that has lasted over 45 years. Anne continues taking courses to improve her knowledge of glazing & design.

Anne’s pieces are designed to appeal to a variety of tastes her work is easily recognized by the spirited swirled handles, colourful glazes and bark like texture on the outside of some pieces.
