To Teach, To Learn, To Share
I have been “potting” for more than 15 years and continue to expand my “potting” horizons. I love making functional items that have purpose and can be used everyday. With the support of the KPG Mentorship Program and Darlene Malcolm-Moran, I have been exploring the use of different clay bodies and different styles of decorating/glazing. I am really thrilled with the results!
Tickets for Celebrate Ceramics, KPG’s fundraiser, will be available during our Holiday Show & Sale. This is the perfect gift for those hard to buy for folks, or as a thank you gift for that special person on your Christmas shopping list. What a great chance for you to offer someone a one-of-a-kind gift while supporting the KPG!
What is Celebrate Ceramics you ask? In support of fostering, educating, and promoting ceramic arts and artists, the Kawartha Potters Guild is holding a fundraiser on Friday April 8, 2022. Each Event Ticket holder, when their number is randomly drawn, will be able to choose a pottery item to take home with them. If you want to bring a friend or partner along with you, Guest Tickets are available. This is a great gift idea while supporting the local ceramic arts community.
Tickets are $75 (guest tickets are $25) which entitles the ticket holder to a beautiful piece of pottery of their choice, complimentary wine and appetizers, live music and an evening of fun and entertainment! Celebrate Ceramics is on Friday April 8, 2022 at the Lions Club on Burnham St. in Peterborough.
Karina (Horus Eye Pottery) has been an active potter for over 15 years. Her work is strongly influenced by medieval, and especially middle eastern designs and ornamentation. She also very much enjoys making reproduction pottery for the re-enactment community. In 2016, Karina participated in the Fusion Mentorship program under Michelle Mendlowitz, and in 2018, she travelled to Icheon, Korea with 5 other members of the Guild, to learn techniques from Korean pottery masters. Also in 2018, Karina was accepted into the KPG Juried show at the Peterborough Art Gallery and was honoured to win the Design Award from Angelo di Petta. Karina also teaches three wheel classes at the Guild. You can find Karina’s work in our Pottery Shop and she will also be participating in the 2021 Holiday Sale from December 14 – 23.
I first met clay in the late 1970s, and have loved it ever since. Many years and workshops later, I still practise, fail, experiment, and explore. The flow of throwing, and then the creative work of painting and incising designs remain my passions. The designs of bright poppies, sunny lemons, and fish among water weeds that I am playing with now originated in efforts to bring more colour to my pieces during FUSION’s 2016-17 Creative Directions programme. Since then a KPG group trip to Korea in 2018 and memories of places like Portugal, southern France, and the northern shores of Lake Superior have all influenced my work. My love for clay continues, as does my intent to create pottery that is both functional and a pleasure for the senses.
Are you ready? Our annual Holiday show and sale is back! With many of our regulars and a few new faces, you can continue your holiday tradition (or start a new one) by visiting us between December 14 – 23. We will be open Monday – Friday from Noon – 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
As with last year, we are giving you the opportunity to book a minimum of a half hour time slot (you can stay longer, just make another booking) to shop in a relaxed and uncrowded atmosphere. You can certainly take the chance and drop by. If we are not full, we can let you in (or advise when you can return). You can book your appointment (s) here.
We are taking donations of socks for local charities if you wish to drop a pair by when you visit. We will also be selling tickets to our Celebrate Ceramics Fundraiser, scheduled for April 2022. More about this event in a future post – watch this space!
Kawartha Potters Guild would like to thank Mr. Glen Wright, a new member of KPG, for his generous gift of money to be used towards our new computer system. This was given in recognition of Karina Bates’ contribution to KPG and teaching.
